Should I get a criminal justice degree?
Main Post: Should I get a criminal justice degree?
Top Comment: You definitely should NOT get a CJ degree. Stick with what you’re working on. You don’t need a CJ degree to get into LE and it won’t give you any benefit whatsoever.
Criminal justice degree

Top Comment: You can be in law enforcement with any degree under the sun. Get something else as a fall back plan incase something doesn’t work out down the line.
Is a Criminal Justice degree really such a waste?

My sister got a CJ degree. She is case manager at an group home for trouble teens and kids from broken families.
The only problem is that she doesn't get paid a lot.
So she got an job in her career field. So I wouldn't call it an waste

Hi, just graduated with cj and was wondering what type of jobs can I get out there? and do I even have a chance to get hired? I have no criminal record and no experience.
Sorry I just need help
Top Comment: Did you go after a criminal justice degree without some sort of idea of what you wanted to do with it?
Got a degree in Criminal Justice and cannot find a decent job.

I am recent grad who is navigating through the job market aimlessly. I'm a first generation graduate so its not my first time figuring out something on my own but a career definitely has more weight than my past endeavors.
Everytime I look for a job, it's either minimum pay of $16 or maybe $20. I don't know if that's common or if I went into a major that secures a good paying job mainly through connections, which I lack.
Is there any advice you have if you've been in my position? The idea of being paid so little after so much studying and work to pay of student loans feels so discouraging.
Anything will help. Ty

Feeling defeated - I feel like I wasted 4 years of college on a criminal justice degree.
Main Post:
So the title basically says what my issue is. 4 years ago in Dec 2020, I graduated from college with a Criminal Justice degree. I knew it was gonna be a challenge at first but I thought eventually I would find a job that I like. The problem is I never really wanted to be in law enforcement. I thought I could find an office job that pays fairly well and settle there, I guess I was wrong. Since November 2021, I’ve been working as a detention officer (don’t even need a degree to do that) and lately I have been feeling so defeated. I hate my job so much, I feel like I should be making more and work better hours, I spent 4 years working on a degree and it all doesn’t matter. If I would’ve known and had guidance when I started college, I would’ve majored in computer science engineering, nursing or something. I have 2 years of experience working at the corrections center but all the job I’m looking at are either leading to a police officer job or something similar. I don’t know what to do anymore. I am so unhappy and stressed. If anyone has any advice for a job they found outside of law enforcement with a criminal justice degree, please let me know.
Top Comment: Go work for the ATF, that's what my mom did with her criminal justice degree. Great money. Great benefits. Lots of cushy 9-5 desk jobs available. Cyber security is also another good route, but you would need a few masters level classes first.
What can I even do with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice?
Main Post:
So I'm in my third year of undergrad for a criminal justice and public policy degree, with a minor in political science, and I really have no idea what I want to do or can do afterwards. It seems like everyone I know in the program is starting to think of law school or going on to do a masters and I don't think those options are right for me due to mental health and financial reasons. I also don't think I'm fit for jobs like a corrections or police officer at all. Any advice?
Top Comment: My sister has a degree in criminal justice, she is an Case manager for an group home type place for pre-teen to teens who have broken homes/didn't get along in foster care homes and who just got out of criminal justice system. She loves it but there is just a lot of paper work. So you can get into case management.
Is Bachelor of Criminal Justice bad?
Main Post:
I originally wanted to major in criminal Justice when I go to college as I want to become a police officer but it seems a lot of people don’t recommend it, why? And if so, what degree would you recommend?
Top Comment: Avoid CJ. In fact, avoid all of the social sciences/liberal arts degrees. Pick something in STEM. Accounting and engineering are good fallbacks if law enforcement doesn’t work out
